BPJS Kesehatan's Digital Innovations Attract AeHIN Delegation
Digital transformation in the administration of the National Health Insurance Programme (JKN) continues to attract attention from BPJS Kesehatan. Various digital service innovations and data management systems developed by BPJS Kesehatan have drawn the interest of the international forum from the Asia eHealth Information Network (AeHIN) delegation, aimed at ensuring the development of digital health systems across the Asia-Pacific region.
BPJS Kesehatan’s Director of Information and Technology, Setiaji, explained that the AeHIN delegation’s visit to the agency provided attendees with an overview of the JKN system’s implementation in Indonesia, including digital innovations designed to enhance access, quality, and efficiency of healthcare services for JKN participants. The event also served as a platform for cross-country exchange of experiences and best practices in developing technology-based health systems.
“Currently, JKN participants exceed 285 million people, or 98% of Indonesia’s population. To support services for participants, BPJS Kesehatan collaborates with 23,625 Primary Healthcare Facilities (FKTP) and 3,207 main hospitals and clinics nationwide,” Setiaji stated.
Setiaji added that the AeHIN delegation was given the opportunity to observe BPJS Kesehatan’s digital dashboard, used to manage the JKN programme more effectively and integrally at BPJS Kesehatan’s Performance Management Center. Through digital technology, the dashboard monitors healthcare service transactions in real time to ensure optimal, accountable, and targeted service delivery.
“BPJS Kesehatan uses data monitoring and analysis systems to detect potential fraud in healthcare claims processing. The use of dashboards and data analytics forms part of efforts to strengthen JKN governance for greater transparency, effectiveness, and sustainability,” Setiaji explained.
Digital transformation within the JKN ecosystem focuses not only on service convenience but also supports faster, data-driven decision-making. According to Setiaji, digital technology is crucial for sustaining the JKN programme and enhancing service quality for participants.
“Through digital dashboards and data integration, BPJS Kesehatan can monitor services, detect potential fraud, and analyse disease patterns more swiftly and accurately. This data also underpins preventive and promotional efforts to encourage healthy lifestyles and optimise JKN funding,” Setiaji said.
International forums like AeHIN are crucial for strengthening cross-border collaboration in digital health system development. For Setiaji, the exchange of experiences and best practices among AeHIN members is expected to foster more adaptable, community-focused healthcare innovations.
“Through this visit, BPJS Kesehatan not only shares experiences regarding JKN management and digital transformation but also opens avenues for international collaboration in digital health system development. We hope AeHIN members’ synergy can be strengthened to deliver better healthcare innovations for citizens across nations,” he added.
Setiaji emphasised that BPJS Kesehatan, alongside the Ministry of Health, continues to strengthen healthcare sector digital transformation through integrated, data-driven systems. Enhancing healthcare interoperability and developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology are part of efforts to deliver more accessible, effective, and sustainable healthcare services in support of JKN implementation.
At the same event, Asia eHealth Information Network (AeHIN) Director Alvin Marcelo praised BPJS Kesehatan’s digital transformation in supporting JKN implementation. He noted that AeHIN has maintained relations and conducted visits to BPJS Kesehatan since 2014, 2023, and 2026, observing significant advancements in the agency’s information technology systems.
“We are impressed by BPJS Kesehatan’s IT developments. We have learned that effective information dashboard management can be achieved with competent and dedicated resources,” Marcelo said.
He also highlighted that Asian countries face similar challenges with non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Therefore, forums like AeHIN are vital for strengthening cross-border collaboration and sharing experiences to prevent diseases and reduce morbidity and mortality from non-communicable illnesses.
