BPJS Kesehatan: Breast Cancer Cases Rise by 860,000 from 2021 to 2025

The increase confirms that breast cancer remains one of the catastrophic diseases with a very significant burden on services and financing within the National Health Insurance Programme (JKN).

Jakarta (ANTARA) - BPJS Kesehatan data shows a trend of increasing breast cancer cases by around 860,000, from 1,080,031 cases in 2021 to 1,941,410 cases in 2025, in line with the rise in verified costs from around Rp1.03 trillion to Rp1.99 trillion.

“This increase confirms that breast cancer is still one of the catastrophic diseases with a very significant burden on services and financing within the National Health Insurance Programme (JKN),” said the Head of Communications at BPJS Kesehatan, Rizzky Anugerah, in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Throughout 2025, he said, a total of 79.5 million JKN participants have undergone health screenings. Of that number, 34.6 million or 43.6 percent of participants were identified as having a risk of certain diseases.

There are 14.4 million participants at risk of cervical cancer and 1 million participants at risk of breast cancer, two diseases commonly affecting women that require early detection.

To that end, they continue efforts to educate and encourage women to undergo screenings so that diseases can be detected earlier and managed optimally.

“The results are evident in 2025, where screening achievements have seen a significant increase compared to the previous year. This shows the participants’ improving awareness of the importance of early health checks,” he said.

“The spirit of Kartini today we realise through facilitating access to health services for women. BPJS Kesehatan is present to ensure women can obtain promotive and preventive services from an early stage, so that health conditions can be maintained sustainably,” he said.

Through the JKN Programme, they guarantee various health services accessible to female participants at every stage of life. These services include IVA and Pap Smear screenings as efforts to prevent cervical cancer, early detection of breast cancer, pregnancy checks, and maternity services according to medical indications.
