BPJS Kesehatan and PERSI Strengthen JKN Collaboration
BPJS Kesehatan is strengthening its collaboration with the All-Indonesia Hospitals Association to maintain the sustainability of the National Health Insurance (JKN) programme. This initiative comes amid increasing burdens from non-communicable diseases and pressures on healthcare financing.
Chief Executive of BPJS Kesehatan, Prihati Pujowaskito, stated that the sustainability of the JKN programme will be the primary focus over the next five years. This was expressed during the PERSI 2026 Seminar on Saturday, 2 May 2026.
According to him, challenges such as population ageing, rising chronic disease cases, and medical cost inflation demand a more adaptive and collaborative health system. “The JKN programme is a key pillar in social protection as well as a driver of national health development,” said Prihati.
He added that as of 1 April 2026, JKN coverage has exceeded 285 million people, or more than 98% of Indonesia’s population. BPJS Kesehatan has also partnered with 23,623 primary healthcare facilities, as well as 3,206 major hospitals and clinics.
However, the increased access to services has been accompanied by a surge in financing burdens, particularly for catastrophic diseases, which reached more than Rp50 trillion throughout 2025. This situation, Prihati said, requires ongoing strengthening of quality control and cost management.
In collaboration with hospitals, BPJS Kesehatan is promoting a transformation of services from volume-based to value-based care, which emphasises the quality of treatment outcomes and patient safety. Hospitals, he said, are not only required to increase the number of services but also to ensure optimal health results.
To support this transformation, BPJS Kesehatan and PERSI are pushing for strengthened clinical governance, adherence to clinical pathways, and the implementation of performance-based payment systems. Additionally, the utilisation of technology such as digital medical records and AI-based claims management is being developed to enhance service efficiency and accuracy.
The collaboration between the two parties is also directed towards expanding healthcare access, particularly in underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions, through innovations like mobile healthcare facilities and telemedicine.
Prihati noted that the success of the JKN programme is the result of joint efforts by various stakeholders, including government support under the leadership of Prabowo Subianto. “With stronger collaboration, we are optimistic that the JKN programme can produce a healthy generation towards Indonesia Emas 2045,” he stated.
