BPJPH Conducts Benchmarking Visit to BPOM to Strengthen National Halal Laboratory Standardisation
The Halal Product Assurance Organising Agency (BPJPH) carried out a benchmarking visit to the National Centre for Drug and Food Testing Development (PPPOMN) of the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) in Jakarta on Thursday (16 April 2026).
This step was taken as a strategic measure to strengthen the standardisation of national halal testing laboratories, while also developing service networks in various regions.
During the working visit, attendees included the Chief Secretary of BPJPH, Muhammad Aqil Irham, Deputy for Supervision and Development of Halal Product Assurance, Chuzaemi Abidin, Director of Halal Product Assurance Supervision, Budi Setyo Hartoto, Head of the BPJPH Halal Laboratory, Giri Cahyono, and other BPJPH officials. The delegation was received by the Head of PPPOMN, Mimin Jiwo Winanti, along with her team.
“Benchmarking is an important step to strengthen the capacity of the national halal laboratory through learning best practices, standardising testing methods, and improving the quality of halal certification services,” he stated in a press release received by Kompas.com on Saturday (18 April 2026).
According to him, a strong laboratory forms the main foundation in providing credible, fast, and reliable halal certification services.
In the meeting, BPJPH also explored BPOM’s experiences regarding national laboratory governance, human resource capacity development, and strengthening laboratory networks in the regions as references for building an integrated halal laboratory system.
“The determination of porcine peptide markers is important so that all laboratories have the same standards. Thus, testing results become more consistent, valid, and provide certainty in the halal certification process,” he explained.
On that occasion, both parties also discussed technical aspects of testing for porcine content as an important parameter in determining product halal status, including the importance of harmonising testing methods between laboratories.
The benchmarking activity is part of BPJPH’s efforts to strengthen testing method standardisation, enhance human resource capacity, and develop halal laboratory networks in the regions. This step is expected to support the provision of more consistent and measurable halal testing services in the halal certification process.
