BPBD Warns of Crocodile Attacks in Komering River, East OKU
Local authorities suspect multiple crocodiles are present in the area. The East Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU) Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in South Sumatra has warned residents to be cautious when active near river streams due to crocodile attacks.
Budi Widiyanto, Head of Emergency and Logistics at BPBD OKU Timur, stated the warning was issued after a crocodile was sighted at Perjaya Dam in Keromongan Village, Martapura Subdistrict, East OKU Regency on Friday, 29 May 2026.
According to local witnesses, this is not the first time wildlife has appeared in the area in recent weeks. He noted that the Komering River’s extensive and pristine ecosystem makes it a natural habitat for large reptiles.
Residents are advised to exercise caution and avoid river activities, particularly near dams, to prevent unwanted incidents. Parents are also urged to supervise children who frequently bathe and play in the river and dam areas to avoid crocodile attacks.
Rangga, a local resident, said the reptile’s appearance has caused anxiety among the community, as the Komering River remains a lifeline for daily activities, from bathing and washing to livelihoods.
‘We hope the relevant authorities responsible for wildlife management will promptly take action to mitigate the situation before casualties occur,’ he added.
