BPBD reports no damage from Tuesday's earthquake

Jember, East Java - Head of the Jember Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Edy Budi Susilo, stated there were no reports of building damage from the 4.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Jember Regency, East Java, on Tuesday afternoon.

‘As of now, there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake,’ Edy Budi Susilo said in Jember on Tuesday.

The earthquake, initially reported as magnitude 5.1 but later revised to 4.8, struck Jember Regency at 3:39 PM WIB in the southeastern region.

The epicentre was located at 9.07 degrees South Latitude and 113.82 degrees East Longitude, 99 kilometres southeast of Jember at a depth of 14 kilometres, with no tsunami risk.

‘We have also instructed district heads to immediately report to the Jember Regent, with a copy to the BPBD chief, regarding any impacts in their respective areas,’ he said.

‘We also advise residents to avoid cracked or damaged buildings caused by the earthquake,’ he added.

He urged the public to check and ensure their homes are structurally sound and free from earthquake-induced damage that could compromise stability before re-entering.

Strong tremors were felt by residents in Jember Regency, with some in Kaliwates District’s residential areas fleeing their homes.

Meanwhile, Malang Geophysical Station Chief Ricko Kardoso stated in a press release that the earthquake was a shallow event caused by rock deformation within the tectonic plate.

‘The modelling results show no tsunami risk from this earthquake,’ he said.

As of 3:55 PM WIB, BMKG monitoring had not detected any aftershocks.

He explained that the source mechanism analysis indicated a strike-slip fault movement.
