BPBD Pangandaran Inspects Residential Areas After Magnitude 5.3 Earthquake

The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Pangandaran Regency, West Java, has inspected all building conditions, especially residential areas along the coast, to determine whether there was any damage caused by the magnitude 5.3 earthquake in the Pangandaran sea. “So far, there have been no reports of damage,” said Head of BPBD Pangandaran Regency Dodo Kusnadi when contacted by mobile phone on Thursday. He stated that the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the magnitude 5.3 earthquake occurred on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, at 21.55 Western Indonesian Time, with coordinates 8.12 degrees South Latitude and 107.91 degrees East Longitude, or 79 kilometres southwest of Pangandaran Regency. The earthquake, he said, was felt quite strongly by residents in Pangandaran Regency because its depth was only about 18 kilometres in the Pangandaran sea area. “The shaking was felt because the earthquake depth was only 18 km,” he said. Nevertheless, he urged the public to remain vigilant because Pangandaran is a disaster-prone area, including for earthquakes and tsunamis. “Alhamdulillah, it is safe, but we urge everyone to stay alert because Pangandaran is a disaster-prone area, especially for tsunamis and earthquakes,” said Dodo Kusnadi. The tremors from the Pangandaran earthquake were felt significantly in several neighbouring areas of Pangandaran Regency, such as Ciamis, Tasikmalaya, and Garut Regencies, and were even felt as far as Bandung Regency.
