BPBD NTB Reports Building Damage in Bima Following NTT Earthquake
The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) has reported building damage in Bima City and Bima Regency following a tectonic earthquake centred in the Flores region of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
Head of BPBD NTB Sadimin stated that urgent needs include logistical support for affected residents, such as ready-to-eat meals, drinking water, blankets, tarpaulins, mattresses, and family supplies.
In Bima City, reported damage includes one moderately damaged house in South Rabangodu Village, Raba District, damage to a wall at the Bulog warehouse causing rice sacks to fall, and damage to the ceiling of the mosque at Hotel Mutmainnah. Meanwhile, in Bima Regency, the Lambitu District Office sustained minor damage in the form of wall cracks. Sadimin added that reports of minor damage to residents’ homes have also been received.
The earthquake, initially recorded at 7.0 magnitude and later updated to 7.7 magnitude, occurred on 15 August 2026 at 05:58 WITA. The epicentre was located at coordinates 8.41 degrees south latitude and 121.39 degrees east longitude, in the sea approximately 30 kilometres northeast of Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara.
BPBD NTB has coordinated with BPBD Bima Regency, BPBD Bima City, and other relevant stakeholders to assess the earthquake’s impact. Rapid Response Teams from the Bima Regency and Bima City BPBD have been deployed to collect data and verify damage in the field. Sadimin noted that the general condition of the community remains under monitoring, with data collection ongoing to ascertain any further damage or impacts.
He urged the public to remain calm and not be swayed by unverified information. Residents were also advised to avoid cracked or damaged buildings and to remain alert for potential aftershocks.
According to earlier reports, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami early warning shortly after the tectonic earthquake occurred. The warning was lifted at 08:30 WITA after observations indicated no significant rise in sea levels. The highest recorded sea level rise was 0.94 metres at Maurole, Ende, at 06:27 WITA. Other recorded rises included 0.38 metres at Kewapante-Sikka Port, 0.25 metres in East Flores, 0.36 metres in Labuan Bajo, 0.17 metres in Dompu, and 0.14 metres in Bakalang-Alor.
BMKG Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis Wijayanto explained that the tectonic earthquake was a shallow quake resulting from activity on the Flores Back-Arc Thrust, with a depth of approximately 15 kilometres.
