BPBD: No reports of house damage in Parimo from M6.2 earthquake

Damage occurred to the ceiling and walls of the Parigi Moutong Public Works office, while no damage to residents’ homes has been reported. The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) said there have been no reports of damage to residents’ homes in Parigi Moutong, Central Sulawesi, following the magnitude 6.2 earthquake that shook the regency on Saturday night (15/8).

“Damage occurred to the ceiling and walls of the Parigi Moutong Public Works office, while no damage to residents’ homes has been reported,” said Acting Head of Parigi Moutong BPBD Moh Rivai when contacted from Palu on Sunday.

He said the BPBD Rapid Response Team is currently conducting assessments in the earthquake epicentre area to check the latest conditions following the tremor.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook Parigi Moutong Regency on Saturday (15/8) at 11.25 pm Central Indonesia Time. In its statement, BMKG said the earthquake did not have tsunami potential.

According to a report from the local BPBD Operations Control Centre, there was one fatality, believed to be from a heart attack during the earthquake. The deceased was a resident of Bugis Village, Mepanga District, named Wiwi Putri Thabah (29).

“Our officers continue to update data in the field, although at present no damage data has been published to the public,” he said.

BPBD also urged the public to remain calm and not be provoked by issues or information whose truth cannot be accounted for. “Ensure that information comes from BMKG or the local regional government. Do not be easily provoked by hoax information, especially information circulating on social media,” said Rivai.
