Ngadireso Village, Poncokusumo District, Malang Regency, East Java, experienced light roof damage to 38 homes due to strong winds. Sadono Irawan, Head of Emergency and Logistics at the Malang Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), said the figure came from field assessments. The distribution of damaged houses across five RT/RW units is as follows: eight in RT 01/RW 01, one in RT 05/RW 02, six in RT 06/RW 02, three in RT 07/RW 02, six in RT 09/RW 02, and 14 in RT 10/RW 02. The wind occurred while the Poncokusumo area was experiencing heavy rain, with the rain accompanied by strong winds, triggering damage to homes and two public facilities. BPBD officers are currently conducting data collection to determine estimated losses from the windstorm. “Some roof repairs are currently being undertaken by residents themselves. There is an urgent need for basic food parcels,” he said. According to BPBD’s disaster-area distribution data, Poncokusumo is within a region prone to strong winds and whirlwinds. In addition to Poncokusumo, several other districts are categorized as vulnerable to strong winds, such as Karangploso, Dau, Singosari, Lawang, and Pakis. Based on an early warning issued by BMKG Juanda Sidoarjo, Malang Regency is one of the areas at risk of extreme weather from 1-10 March 2026. The extreme weather types include moderate to heavy rain, flash floods, landslides, strong winds, whirlwinds, and hail. BPBD urges the public to heighten vigilance and self-preparedness in the coming days.
