BPBD Continues Cooling Operations After Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Extinguished

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Tangerang Regency, Banten, is continuing cooling operations at several points of the Jatiwaringin Final Disposal Site (TPA) in Mauk, even though the disaster has been successfully brought under control after 11 days. Head of BPBD Tangerang Regency Achmad Taufik stated on Saturday that officers are still carrying out cooling processes at the location to prevent the re-emergence of hotspots or plumes of smoke. “Ground extinguishing by the BPBD Fire Department Unit is still being carried out with watering assisted by officers from the Environmental and Hygiene Service (DLHK) in an effort to anticipate any new fire or smoke emerging over the next four days,” said Achmad. He noted that the fire, which engulfed up to 15 hectares, has now been fully controlled, reaching 100 per cent containment. During the extinguishing process, BPBD deployed personnel and fire engines, and received assistance in the form of four water-bombing helicopters to accelerate the handling of the fire, especially on the upper parts of the waste mounds. Achmad said that with these conditions, there are no longer any residents needing to evacuate due to smoke caused by the fire. “On Friday, 10 July 2026, at around 14.00 WIB, the condition of the Jatiwaringin TPA was extinguished and there were no more residents being evacuated,” he said. He mentioned that residents around the TPA are no longer required to wear masks. Nevertheless, health workers remain on standby to monitor the residents’ condition. “Health workers are staying put,” he said. Meanwhile, the Head of Tactical Control and Operations Evaluation at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Riswandi, said his agency is maintaining support with personnel and air assets to assist in handling the fire if needed by the local government. “So our fleets, the air assets, if needed by the Regent or other regional heads for extinguishing forest and land fires or TPA fires, we are ready to help,” he said. BNPB reminded all regional governments that have final waste processing sites to enhance mitigation measures during the dry season. “And also going forward, this is a lesson for all of us who have areas or TPAs to mitigate potential fires like the one that occurred here. Starting with wetting and so forth, because the weather, according to BMKG forecasts, is very hot and extreme,” he said.
