BPBD Continues Cooling Operations After Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Extinguished
Ground-based extinguishing carried out by the BPBD Fire Brigade continues, with spraying assisted by officers from the Environmental and Cleanliness Agency (DLHK) in an effort to prevent any new flames or smoke from emerging over the next four days.
Tangerang Regency (ANTARA) - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Tangerang Regency, Banten, is continuing the cooling process at several fire points at the Jatiwaringin Final Disposal Site (TPA) in Mauk, even though disaster control operations have been successfully handled over eleven days.
Head of Tangerang Regency BPBD Achmad Taufik said that as of Saturday (11/7), officers were still continuing the cooling process at the site to prevent the re-emergence of fire points or plumes of smoke.
“Ground-based extinguishing carried out by the BPBD Fire Brigade continues with spraying, assisted by officers from the Environmental and Cleanliness Agency (DLHK), in an effort to ensure no new fire or smoke emerges over the next four days,” said Achmad.
He said the fire, which swept across up to 15 hectares, has now been brought fully under control, reaching 100 percent.
During the extinguishing process, BPBD deployed personnel and fire engines, and received assistance in the form of four water-bombing helicopters to accelerate the handling of the fire, particularly on the upper parts of the waste mounds.
Achmad said that given the current conditions, there are no longer any residents who need to be evacuated as a result of the smoke produced by the fire.
“On Friday, 10 July 2026 at around 2pm local time, the condition of the Jatiwaringin landfill was extinguished and no residents were being evacuated,” he said.
He noted that residents living around the landfill are no longer required to wear masks. Even so, health officers remain on standby to monitor residents’ conditions. “Health officers are still staying on,” he said.
Meanwhile, Head of Tactical Control and Operations Evaluation at BNPB, Riswandi, said the agency remains ready to provide support personnel and air fleets to assist with fire response if needed by regional governments.
“So our fleets, the air fleets, if needed by the Regent or other regional heads for extinguishing forest and land fires or landfill fires, we are ready to help,” he said.
BNPB reminded all regional governments that operate final waste processing sites to step up mitigation measures during the dry season.
“And going forward, this is also a lesson for all of us who have areas or landfills to mitigate the potential for fires like what happened here. Starting with wetting operations and so on, because according to BMKG forecasts, the weather is extremely hot and extreme,” he said.
