BP3MI: Cause of Palembang's Indonesian migrant worker's death in Cambodia awaiting autopsy
Palembang, Indonesia — The South Sumatra Province Office of the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection and Empowerment Agency (BP3MI) said the cause of death of the Indonesian migrant worker (PMI) from Palembang, M Erlangga, 28, who died in Cambodia, is still awaiting autopsy results from Bhayangkara Hospital Palembang. Head of BP3MI South Sumatra (Sumsel) Waydinsyah in Palembang said the victim died on 17 February 2026 after reportedly falling from a building believed to be his place of work. The victim died during evacuation to hospital. He explained the victim suffered severe head bleeding. To confirm the cause of death, the family handed over the body to Bhayangkara Palembang Hospital for autopsy before burial. The body arrived in Palembang on Wednesday (4/3) and was immediately taken to the hospital for further examination. At present, Indonesian representatives in Cambodia are still limited in information regarding the chronology of the incident. Cambodian authorities say the documents related to the victim’s examination will be sent after the body arrives in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the Head of the South Sumatra Labour Department Indra Bangsawan said the victim had already worked in Cambodia twice. He urged the public not to be easily enticed by overseas job offers with promises of high salaries without clear employment.
