The Batam Free Trade Zone Authority (BP Batam) is continuously strengthening its efforts to attract foreign investment by enhancing cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Tokyo, the Indonesia Investment Promotion Centre (IIPC) Tokyo, and Bank BNI Tokyo. This synergy aims to expand investment promotion and open opportunities for more Japanese companies to enter Batam.

During a meeting held on Thursday (3/9/2026), BP Batam presented economic developments, industrial growth, and various available investment opportunities in Batam. This move is part of a strategy to reinforce Batam’s position as one of the primary investment destinations for Japanese companies in Indonesia.

Ariastuty Sirait, Member/Deputy for Public Services at BP Batam, stated that Japanese companies are known to be highly selective when determining investment locations. Therefore, providing complete information regarding industrial estates, infrastructure, and ease of licensing is a crucial factor in attracting investor interest.

“Japanese companies are known to be very detailed in determining areas for their investments. Consequently, comprehensive information regarding zones, infrastructure readiness, certainty in the licensing process, and ease of doing business is vital,” said Ariastuty.

Japan Ranks Among Top Five Foreign Investors in Batam

BP Batam noted that Japan remains one of the largest foreign investors in Batam. Based on investment realisation in the first quarter of 2026, Japan ranked among the top five countries of origin for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

During that period, total investment realisation in Batam reached IDR 17.4 trillion, consisting of FDI of IDR 8.8 trillion and Domestic Direct Investment (DDI) of ID_R 8.5 trillion.

Meanwhile, by the end of the first semester of 2026, total investment entering Batam had reached IDR 38.97 trillion, reflecting continuous growth amidst high investor interest in Batam’s industrial zones.

Many Japanese Companies Already Operating in Batam

Currently, numerous Japanese companies are operating in Batam across various strategic sectors, ranging from electronics, automotive components, and manufacturing to the chemical industry.

These companies include PT Epson Batam, PT Yokogawa Manufacturing Batam, PT Sumitomo Wiring Systems Batam Indonesia, PT SIIX Electronics Indonesia, PT Rubycon Indonesia, PT Patlite Indonesia, PT Shimano Batam, PT NOK Precision Component Batam, and PT Nissin Kogyo Batam.

The presence of these companies serves as evidence that Batam can provide a competitive investment ecosystem and acts as a positive reference for other potential Japanese investors.

BP Batam Offers Investment Ease

During the meeting, BP Batam also requested support from KBRI Tokyo, IIPC Tokyo, and BNI Tokyo to expand the promotion of Batam to businesses in Japan.

Batam offers several competitive advantages, including a strategic location near Singapore and Asian markets, continuously developing infrastructure, and an integrated investment licensing system under the authority of BP Batam.

According to Ariastuty, legal certainty and the ease of the licensing process are added values that can enhance Batam’s competitiveness compared to other investment regions in Indonesia.

“We want Japanese companies to not only recognise Batam as part of Indonesia but to see Batam as a region that is ready to receive and support the development of their investments,” said Ariastuty.

Through collaboration with KBRI Tokyo, IIPC Tokyo, and BNI Tokyo, BP Batam hopes that information regarding Batam’s investment potential will be more widely known by the Japanese business community, thereby driving new investment and strengthening Batam’s economic growth.
