BP Batam Opens Doors Wider for Japanese Investors
The city of Batam aims to expand its investment niche from Japan. The Batam Free Trade Zone Authority (BP Batam) is partnering with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Tokyo, the Indonesia Investment Promotion Centre (IIPC) Tokyo, and Bank BNI Tokyo to open new investment access and reassure Japanese companies that Batam remains a viable region for industrial development.
This effort was undertaken during a meeting held on Thursday (3/9). During the meeting, BP Batam presented Batam’s economic and industrial developments, along with several investment opportunities available for Japanese companies to develop.
Japan is not a new player on Batam’s investment map. Based on investment realisation in the first quarter of 2026, Japan ranked among the top five foreign direct investment (FDI) countries in Batam.
During that period, Batam’s investment value reached IDR 17.4 trillion. Of this, IDR 8.8 trillion came from FDI, while IDR 8.5 trillion came from domestic direct investment (PMDN). By the first semester of 2026, total investment in Batam had reached IDR 38.97 trillion.
Several Japanese companies already operating in Batam include PT Epson Batam, PT Yokogawa Manufacturing Batam, PT Sumitomo Wiring Systems Batam Indonesia, PT SIIX Electronics Indonesia, PT Rubycon Indonesia, PT Patlite Indonesia, PT Shimano Batam, PT NOK Precision Component Batam, and PT Nissin Kogyo Batam.
For BP Batam, the presence of these companies is more than just an investment record. Their experience operating in Batam can serve as a reference for potential Japanese investors who are still considering locations to expand their businesses in Indonesia.
“Japanese companies are known to be very detailed in determining locations for their investments. Therefore, comprehensive information regarding the region, infrastructure readiness, certainty in licensing processes, and ease of doing business is very important,” said Ariastuty Sirait, Member/Deputy of Public Services at BP Batam.
Consequently, BP Batam has requested the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, IIPC Tokyo, and BNI Tokyo to assist in expanding the promotion of Batam to potential Japanese investors. Batam offers several advantages, ranging from its proximity to Singapore and Asian markets to its infrastructure and streamlined investment processes.
For Japanese investors, certainty in processes is a key consideration. BP Batam believes that its licensing authority can serve as an attraction, as the investment process can be conducted in a more integrated manner.
Through cooperation with the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, IIPC Tokyo, and BNI Tokyo, BP Batam hopes that information regarding investment opportunities in Batam will reach a wider range of Japanese companies. This collaboration is also expected to result in more potential investors visiting Batam to personally assess business opportunities.
“We want Japanese companies to not only recognise Batam as part of Indonesia, but to see Batum as a region that is ready to receive and support the development of their investments,” said Ariastuty.
