Boy dies at Parangtritis resort

YOGYAKARTA: One of the thousands of people celebrating Idul Fitri at the Parangtritis Beach resort here died on Wednesday.

The victim, Novi Budi Santosa, 10, was dragged into the sea by a large wave.

Taufik, 40, a member of a local search and rescue team, said the victim was playing with other members of his family on the beach at about 2 p.m.

At that time, the beach was packed with vacationers on the second day of the Idul Fitri holiday.

"Suddenly, a big wave came in and dragged him into the sea," said Taufik.

The boy's father, Samsuri, 55, attempted to save his son, but the wave dragged the boy off too swiftly, said Taufik.

The police and search and rescue teams are looking for the body of the victim.

"There is a notice prohibiting people from swimming on the beach because the waves are unpredictable. But some people violate the rule," said Taufik.

Despite the accident, thousands of people were still enjoying the beach on Wednesday. -- Antara
