Boxing biting causes chaos
MANILA (AFP): One Filipino fan was shot dead by his uncle while another bit his neighbor's ear during arguments over boxer Mike Tyson's disqualification for chomping on Evander Holyfield's ear in their world heavyweight title bout, a newspaper reported yesterday.
An argument over the fight led to the fatal shooting of 23- year-old government employee, Baldwin Bacani, by an uncle in the northern city of Cabanatuan, the Today newspaper said.
The two were drinking with friends when the argument broke out. The irate uncle, who sided with Tyson, took a .45 caliber pistol and shot his nephew in the chest, it added.
In the same town an unidentified fan engaged in a heated argument with his neighbor Manny Reyes after Tyson was disqualified Sunday in Las Vegas. The fan bit Reyes's ear during a scuffle, the newspaper reported.
It was not reported whether Reyes' ear was bitten off or not.
The course of true love was also a casualty of the fight.
In the nearby town of San Isidro, a Holyfield fan banned a Tyson supporter from courting his daughter, while a wife did not serve lunch and dinner to her husband following an argument over the match, the newspaper said.
In the town of Munoz near San Isidro, two friends engaged in a brawl after one of them failed to pay a 30,000-peso (US$1,150) bet he had wagered on Tyson, the newspaper said.
