The Indonesian and Japanese governments have agreed to cooperate in the maritime sector, including disaster risk management. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that this cooperation is based on the background of both Indonesia and Japan being maritime nations vulnerable to natural disasters. “As two maritime nations vulnerable to natural disasters, an agreement has been reached on maritime cooperation, including the promotion of the fisheries industry and strengthening cooperation in disaster risk management, including flood control measures,” said Sanae after a bilateral meeting with President Prabowo Subianto in Tokyo on Tuesday (31/3/2026). In the economic field, Indonesia and Japan agreed to strengthen concrete cooperation, including support for the development of Indonesian industry and the enhancement of human resource capacity. “Ongoing support for the development of Indonesian industry and cooperation in human resource development, including the AI sector,” revealed PM Sanae. The two leaders also emphasised the importance of collaboration in managing resources and energy. In the security field, Japan and Indonesia agreed to strengthen cooperation through support for enhancing the capacity of the Navy as well as maritime security. She also highlighted the development of defence cooperation between the two countries. “We welcome the fact that following the 2 plus 2 meeting last year, discussions on arrangements for defence cooperation between defence authorities are ongoing. Through these efforts, our two countries will cooperate to further promote peace and stability in the region and the world,” Sanae continued. Sanae emphasised that close cooperation between Indonesia and Japan is important, especially in maintaining regional stability and global energy resilience. “From the perspective of energy security, our two countries affirm to cooperate closely,” she said.
