The Vesak celebration on 31 May 2026 at Borobudur Temple continues to attract thousands of Buddhist devotees and international tourists. During this special occasion, will visitors still be able to tour the temple or will it be closed? Gistang Richard Panutur, Commercial Director of InJourney Destination Management (IDM) – PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko, confirmed that tourism operations will proceed as usual. However, on the day of the Vesak ceremony (Sunday, 31 May 2026), the temple will close at 2pm WIB to allow preparations for the main religious rituals. ‘After this time, visitors will be directed to leave the area to prepare for the Vesak ceremonies,’ he stated in Magelang, Central Java. The restriction ensures the religious processions proceed solemnly and orderly. Visitors are also prohibited from ascending the temple structure on the day of the celebration, though they can still enjoy the surrounding areas outside the main ceremonial zone. Fatmawati, Chair of the Borobudur Vesak Peace Lanterns, revealed this year’s peace lantern count has reached 2,570, one more than last year as a symbol of good fortune and hope. ‘We add one lantern each year for extra luck,’ she said. The lantern release is a highly anticipated event, drawing not only Buddhists but also tourists seeking the serene beauty of Vesak night. Additionally, drone shows will feature prominently, with 570 drones deployed this year – up from 450 in 2025 – representing the last three digits of the Buddhist year. The light formations will create a spectacular visual display over Borobudur. The combination of sacred rituals, peace lanterns, and drone performances ensures an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
