Border Line in Sebatik Updated, 127.3 Hectares of Malaysian Territory Enters Indonesia

The government has agreed on a new border line on Sebatik Island, North Kalimantan, with Malaysia. A total of 127.3 hectares along the Sebatik Island border that previously belonged to Malaysia now becomes Indonesian territory.

“The acceleration of handling the impacts of resolving the affirmation of the Indonesia-Malaysia land border on Sebatik Island has been completed. The resolution of the border affirmation on Sebatik Island is a tangible manifestation of the success of peaceful diplomacy that strengthens Indonesia’s territorial sovereignty,” said Presidential Chief of Staff (KSP) Muhammad Qodari during a press conference at the Presidential Staff Office, quoted from the KSP YouTube, Thursday (16/4/2026).

He stated that the change in the border line in that border area is the result of peaceful diplomacy in the border region. A total of 127.3 hectares that previously constituted part of Malaysia now becomes part of Indonesian territory.

“With the agreement of the new border line covering 127.3 hectares which, under the old border, was part of Malaysia, it is now legally Indonesian territory,” he said.

“Meanwhile, only 4.9 hectares of territory under the old Indonesian border now becomes part of Malaysia,” he added.

Furthermore, the KSP’s field verification results on Sebatik Island need to be promptly followed up and the ratification process of the border crossing agreement or BCA between Indonesia-Malaysia and Indonesia-Timor Leste completed to resolve border disputes.
