Border guard kills five
HANOI (AFP): A border guard in central Vietnam opened fire on his colleagues, killing five and injuring two, before turning the gun on himself, police said on Tuesday.
Pham Dinh Giap, a border guard based in Dien Chau district of central Nghe An province, sprayed seven guards with his AK-47 while they were eating in a camp canteen, killing five, a provincial police officer said. He then put the gun to his head and took his own life, police said.
The incident, which took place last week, was the culmination of a long dispute between Giap and his superiors and was apparently in retaliation for their treatment of him.
Several weeks prior to the shooting, Giap, 20, attacked one of his superiors with a hammer after being disciplined for arriving late at the border camp. He was then summoned in front of the entire camp, given a public reprimand and temporarily removed from his duties. The two injured men are still in hospital.
