Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Java North Coast Management Authority (Badan Otorita Pengelola Pantai Utara Jawa/BOPPJ) has revealed that water from the Giant Sea Wall (GSW) retention reservoirs can be utilised as raw water or clean water for the public.

“The purpose of the retention reservoir is to become fresh water in the future,” said BOPPJ Head Didit Herdiawan Ashaf in Jakarta on Monday.

He explained that the utilisation of water from the retention reservoirs would be managed by the respective regional governments along the North Coast (Pantura) of Java, rather than by BOPPJ.

“However, I recommend that the retention reservoirs we are building can be beneficially used as raw water and clean water for residents,” Didit said.

Prabowo explained that the construction of the 535-kilometre giant sea wall along the North Coast of Java is the government’s solution to address rising sea levels of approximately 5 centimetres per year caused by the impact of climate change.

He assessed that the threat of climate change is already imminent. Moreover, 60 per cent of national industry is located in the north coast area of Java.

Productive rice paddies that serve as the national food granary could also be threatened if the sea wall is not built promptly.
