Boosting Tourist Visits, Tambora National Park to Host National Running Event
The Tambora National Park Authority will organise a running event titled Tambora Jungle Run on 5 June 2026. This national-scale running event is expected to boost tourist visits to the national park located on Sumbawa Island in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). “This event is part of the strategy to develop sports tourism in Mount Tambora, while also expanding promotion to national and international levels,” said the Head of the Tambora National Park Office, Abdul Azis Bakry, on Friday (10/4/2026). The running event will invite participants to exercise while enjoying the beautiful landscape of Mount Tambora. The jungle run route will cross forests and savannas, while prioritising participant safety. Abdul Aziz explained that Mount Tambora’s current status is still at Level II or Alert. He assured that the running event will be held in a safe radius. “The activity location is guaranteed to be within a safe radius of about five kilometres from the crater rim,” he stated. Abdul Aziz hopes that the organisation of the Tambora Jungle Run can provide economic benefits to the surrounding community through increased sectors of accommodation, transportation, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Most importantly, he continued, the activity can serve as a means of promoting conservation-based tourism. “We want to show that Tambora not only has natural beauty but is also ready to become a safe and classy sports tourism destination,” he said. Abdul Aziz is optimistic that the Tambora Jungle Run 2026 can attract participation from runners from various regions in Indonesia and abroad. According to him, the event will also strengthen Tambora’s position as one of the leading sports tourism destinations in NTB.
