Boosting Milk Production: Central Java Provincial Government Introduces Artificial Insemination Innovation
The Central Java Provincial Government is boosting dairy milk production through technological innovation that allows farmers to determine the sex of calves via artificial insemination. This move aims to accelerate the increase of dairy cattle populations and milk output across the province.
The Deputy Governor of Central Java, Taj Yasin Maimoen, stated that this technology represents a significant breakthrough in the development of livestock farming in the region. With this technology, farmers can align calf births with their specific livestock development needs.
Taj Yasin made these remarks while representing Governor Ahmad Luthfi at the Jateng Livestock Fest 2026, held at the Central Java Department of Agriculture and Livestock office in Semarang on Friday (4/9).
“If the community wants female cows, it can be arranged here. If they want male cows, it is also possible. This is an extraordinary innovation. We can regulate the population,” said Taj Yasin.
This technology is considered vital to supporting Central Java’s ambition to become a milk production centre. He noted that expanding the dairy cattle population must continue so that the milk production potential in Central Java can grow even larger.
Currently ranking third nationally, Central Java contributes approximately 9.4 per cent to the overall national milk production. “We want Central Java to become a central milk producer,” he added.
Milk production development is also being pursued by strengthening dairy hubs in various regions. During the event, the Central Java Provincial Government signed a joint commitment regarding dairy cattle development in Batang and Brebes Regencies.
Taj Yasin mentioned that livestock development must be accompanied by an increase in public consumption of animal protein, including milk. He emphasised that increased production must be balanced with increased consumption so that the community can benefit from the availability of nutritious food.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Central Java Department of Agriculture and Livestock, Defransisco Dasilva Tavares, explained that the artificial insemination technology utilises sexed frozen dairy cattle semen. This technology was developed by the Central Java Artificial Insemination Centre (BIB).
“For example, if a farmer has 10 cows and wants all of them to be inseminated to produce females, or all males, it is possible,” said Defransisco.
On the same occasion, the Central Java Provincial Government handed over sexed frozen dairy semen to the Food and Agriculture Office of Batang Regency. Dairy cattle assistance was also provided to the Banjarsari I Farmer Group in Semampir Village, Reban District, Batang Regency.
Additionally, GFP certificates were presented to the Banjarsari I Farmer Group and the Sepet Harum II Farmer Group in Pacet Village, Reban District, Batang Regency.
The development of dairy cattle in Batang and Brebes is part of the provincial government’s steps to strengthen the dairy ecosystem. The programme was also marked by the launch of ‘Gerbang Susu Jawa Tengah’ (Central Java Dairy Development Movement).
Jateng Livestock Fest 2026 is part of the 190th Livestock and Animal Health Service Month, running from 26 August to 26 September 2026.
In addition to the launch of Gerbang Susu, the event featured the distribution of animal protein assistance, a quality livestock market exhibition, a Creative Bento Challenge, and the ‘Gerimis’ (Central Java Milk Drinking Movement). A total of 200 packages containing chicken, milk, and eggs were also distributed to the community.
