Boosting Healthcare Facility Equity in 3T Regions, Health Minister Prepares This Strategy
The Ministry of Health continues to push for the equal distribution of healthcare facilities in the 3T (Tertinggal, Terdepan, dan Terluar - Underdeveloped, Frontier, and Outermost) regions. This step is being taken by building hospitals at the district/city level and establishing cooperation with the private sector.
Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin revealed that the government plans to build 514 hospitals in districts/cities. Not only that, the government plans to upgrade 400 hospitals across all districts and cities.
With this equalisation of healthcare facilities, the public will no longer need to move cities to seek other, more capable healthcare facilities.
‘People used to have to go to Jakarta for surgery. People who had vehicle accidents had to go to Bandung. Now they don’t need to. In Sukabumi it can be sorted out, in Nias it can be sorted out, in Sumba they don’t need to be taken to Surabaya, it can be sorted out there,’ Budi said during CNBC Indonesia’s Economic Update 2026 with the theme ‘Performance Achievements and Direction for Strengthening Ministry Priority Programmes’, Wednesday (24/6/2026).
Additionally, many private hospital networks are now expanding into various regions across Indonesia.
‘What I observe now is that many hospital networks, starting with the private ones, for example Hermina, Siloam, Murni Teguh, and IMC, are beginning to aggressively open hospitals in the regions,’ Budi revealed.
He also explained that foreign companies are planning to build healthcare facilities by partnering with local companies.
‘Mayapada is cooperating with Apollo, planning to enter Batam. Then Aspen Medical wants to be in West Java, they want to build. BIH with Swire, a state-owned enterprise, is building in Bali,’ Budi clarified.
The Ministry of Health is currently drafting regulations to make it easier for the private sector to invest in healthcare facilities.
‘The investors are Indians, or Americans, or Australians, building hospitals in the regions, so that the services for the community are good,’ he concluded.
