Boosting Energy Security: Pertamina NRE Launches Bioethanol Development Centre in Lampung

Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) continues to accelerate the realisation of national energy security based on green energy. On Monday, 14 September 2026, the company officially began operations of the Bioethanol Development Centre located in Tegineneng, Pesawaran Regency, Lampung Province.

This pilot-scale facility has been comprehensively built as a centre for developing the bioethanol ecosystem, covering stages from raw material selection and cultivation methods to production technology trials and final validation.

The President Director of Pertamina NRE, John Anis, explained that the development of this facility employs an innovative approach using multi-feedstock and multi-generation technology. Through this concept, the pilot centre can process various types of raw materials and efficiently combine first-generation (1G) and second-generation (2G) bioethanol production to maximise local resources.

The inauguration of this strategic facility was attended by several key figures, including the Deputy Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Deputy Head of BKPM, Todotua Pasaribu; President Commissioner of PT Pertamina (Persero), Mochamad Iriawan; Director of Risk Management of PT Pertamina (Persero), Ahmad Siddik Badruddin; and the Governor of Lampung, Rahmat Mirzani Djausal. Also present were strategic partners from Japan, namely the President Director of PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), Nandi Julyanto, and the President Director of Toyota Tsusho Indonesia (TTI), Toru Murakami.

The inauguration of the Bioethanol Development Centre also featured the signing of two important Memoranda of Understanding (MoU). The first is a partnership between Pertamina NRE and the Lampung Provincial Government, focusing on energy security, food security, and agribusiness development in the region.

The second is a collaboration between Pertamina NRE, TMMIN, TTI, and the Research Association of Biomass Innovation for Next Generation Automobile Fuels (raBit). This partnership aims to conduct technical and commercial feasibility studies regarding the sustainable production and utilisation of bioethanol in Indonesia, including agendas for knowledge and technology transfer.

Responding to this move, the Deputy Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Deputy Head of BKPM, Todotua Pasaribu, noted that bioethanol development will create a beneficial circular ecosystem. The agricultural, industrial, technological, and investment sectors, as well as the community, will be connected within a single renewable economic chain.
