Bontang Mayor Supports IMM Coral Reef Transplantation
The Bontang City Government is continuing to strengthen synergy with various stakeholders to ensure environmentally sound development. This concrete collaboration was reflected in a Tree Seedling Planting and Discovery Scuba Coral Reef Transplantation event organised by PT Indominco Mandiri (IMM) in conjunction with World Environment Day on Wednesday, 24 June 2026. Carrying the theme ‘Time to Work for the Climate’, the activity took place in the Utilities Powerplant Area and the Underwater Arboretum Area of PT Indominco Mandiri. The event was attended directly by Bontang Mayor Neni Moerniaeni, Dandim 0908/Bontang Lieutenant Colonel Inf. Ardiansyah, Head of the Environmental Agency Heru Triatmojo, and Secretary of the Food Security, Fisheries and Agriculture Agency Debora Kristiani. From the private sector, PT Indominco Mandiri’s Head of Mining Engineering Edy Susanto, Project Manager of PT Pama Persada Nusantara Dwi Setiono, along with management and work partners, also accompanied the conservation action. ‘The commemoration of World Environment Day is a global momentum to reflect on the relationship between humans and nature and to evaluate the impact of human activities on the environment and climate change,’ said Mayor Neni Moerniaeni. She also appreciated PT IMM for its long-term commitment to preserving Bontang’s environment. Environmental preservation, she said, cannot be done alone. ‘We must move together. Environmental preservation is a collective movement. Tree planting and coral reef transplantation are very important real actions to maintain the balance of both terrestrial and marine ecosystems,’ she said. Responding to current weather anomalies, the Mayor delivered a firm message. ‘Everything we do today is an investment for the future. What we protect now will become a valuable heritage for our children and grandchildren. We protect the earth, the earth protects us,’ she said. PT IMM’s Head of Mining Engineering, Edy Susanto, explained that this programme has been running since 2019 and was intensified again in 2022. ‘PT Indominco Mandiri is committed to carrying out sustainable environmental protection. Synergy between the company, government, and the community is the key to success in maintaining environmental sustainability,’ he said. The company has conducted strict monitoring at 12 water points to protect coral reefs and seagrass beds as blue carbon. Damage restoration is carried out through coral transplantation rehabilitation at points C2, C3, C5, and C12, which has now successfully reached 2,336 planted seedlings. The ceremonial closing featured the presentation of souvenirs including eucalyptus oil, biodiversity books, and products from fostered village MSMEs, before all invitees took part in symbolic tree seedling planting and Discovery Scuba for a sustainable environmental future.
