Bomer Pasaribu to lead SPSI
CARINGIN, West Java (JP): Bomer Pasaribu, the secretary-
general of the All Indonesian Workers Union (SPSI), was elected
to chair the government-backed organization during its congress
this weekend.
Bomer, who replaces Imam Sudarwo, will head a presidium of
SPSI leaders until the year 2000.
The congress was closed by Vice President Try Sutrisno
yesterday.
The other members elected to the presidium were Marzuki
Achmad, Datuk Bagindo, Tosari Wijaya, Wilhelmus Bokha and Atika
Karwa. Andi Hisbuldin Patundru, the former chairman of SPSI's
printing and media sectoral union, will become secretary-general
The presidium was elected after a marathon meeting, which
lasted from Saturday night until Sunday evening at a secret place
in Sukabumi, near here.
The congress also decided to transform the labor organization
into a confederation of 13 sectoral unions, to set up a 17-member
executive board, whose members will include those of the
presidium, and a 30-member plenary board.
The plenary board will be made up of members representing the
13 sectoral unions.
Bomer said the four-day congress had decided on a number of
programs to make the labor organization more professional and
independent while improving the quality of workers and their
welfare.
"Sectoral unions will play their roles in the front line for
the workers interests while the federation will design the
strategy and policy to make the organization more professional,"
he said. (rms)
