Bomb kills two, injures five

JAKARTA: At least two people were killed and five others injured in a bomb blast on Wednesday on Jl. Antasari in Sampit, East Kotawaringin regency, Central Kalimantan.

Central Kalimantan Governor Asmawi Agani confirmed the incident, but declined to give further details, Antara reported.

The news agency said none of the victims had been identified but that the two fatalities were a man and a baby. All victims were admitted to Murjani Sampit Hospital.

This is the second blast over the past two days. A homemade bomb exploded at state Dr. Sardjito General Hospital in Yogyakarta on Tuesday. The blast injured a security guard and damaged a lavatory near the hospital's morgue.

Wednesday's blast is the second incident to hit Central Kalimantan in the past week. The latest was an intercommunity clash in Kereng Pangi, some 116 kilometers from Sampit on the weekend. The clash claimed at least one victim and demolished nine homes.

In an effort to restore security, the police launched a sweep to disarm residents. They seized at least 40 sharp weapons and 26 Molotov cocktails. (lup)
