One bomb exploded outside the Syrian Ministry of Defence building in Damascus on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, killing one serviceman and wounding several others, including civilians.

The Syrian Ministry of Defence said in a brief statement that soldiers had initially found a bomb ready to detonate in the Bab Sharqi area of central Damascus. As the defusal operation was under way, a car near the site suddenly exploded.

‘The soldiers were dismantling the bomb, a car exploded nearby,’ the ministry said.

The blast killed one military member and left several others injured. The ministry said the incident occurred outside the ministry building but did not provide further details about the target or the facility affected.

State media reported one death and 12 injuries in the incident. The injured included civilians who were in the area at the time of the blast.

No group immediately claimed responsibility. However, similar past attacks are often linked to the militant group ISIS, which remains active and has carried out sporadic attacks in Syria even after the Assad regime fell from power following rebels entering Damascus in December 2024.

Since that shift in power, Syria’s security situation has remained far from stable. Various parts of the country continue to face threats from bombings, clashes between armed groups, and sporadic military operations.

Bab Sharqi is one of the key areas in Damascus, housing several government facilities and providing access to the old city. The blast in the area sparked panic among residents and heightened concerns about the possibility of a new wave of attacks in the city centre.
