Bomb Explodes in Backpack at Apartment Building
An explosion occurred on Wednesday at an apartment building in the Kolonos district of central Athens, Greece, injuring two police officers and two civilians.
Greek police said all four victims were taken by ambulance for medical treatment. The blast happened as officers inspected a backpack suspected of containing drugs at the building’s entrance.
According to an unnamed police official, officers had arrived after a resident and the building manager reported suspected drugs at the site. During their inspection, police instead found components believed to be parts of an explosive device.
The bomb detonated while officers were examining the backpack. Another police official said the device may have been activated remotely.
The building manager was also injured. Greek police said the explosion was not considered an act of terrorism. The homicide unit is leading the investigation to determine where the explosive materials came from and who was responsible.
