Bojonegoro Villages Back Japanese-Backed Bioethanol Plant Construction Plan
The village governments of Gayam and Katur in Gayam District, Bojonegoro Regency, East Java, have expressed full support for plans to construct a bioethanol plant in the district. The backing from villages situated in the ring one area of the Banyu Urip oil and gas field in the Cepu Block emerged following a site survey conducted by the Ministry of Investment and Downstream Industries/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), together with the East Java Provincial Investment and One-Stop Integrated Services Agency (DPMPTSP), Bojonegoro's DPMPTSP, the Bojonegoro Forest Management Unit and its staff, forest farmer groups, and local leadership on Wednesday, 28 May 2025.
Gayam Village Head Winto said his administration supports the establishment of the bioethanol plant in the district. Besides creating employment opportunities for local residents, it would also boost the economy for farmers, who could participate in supplying raw materials such as maize.
"The land area is approximately 1,400 hectares, with a population of 6,471 in Gayam Village, of whom eight per cent are farmers. So if there is a bioethanol plant, farmers can be involved in supplying raw materials. This would improve their economy and also reduce unemployment," Winto said during discussions with BKPM, JICA and other stakeholders at the Gayam Village Hall.
Katur Village Head Sukono echoed the sentiment, expressing full support for the plant's establishment as it would create new employment opportunities for surrounding residents.
"We also strongly support this bioethanol plant. Farmers and local residents can be involved, which would help reduce existing unemployment," Sukono said.
Bojonegoro Regency Government, through DPMPTSP Head Budiyanto, said the administration welcomed the bioethanol plant plans. He noted that increased investment would further strengthen the local economy.
"Our hope is that this bioethanol plant can motivate other investors to enter Bojonegoro. This would help reduce unemployment and improve the economic welfare of residents," he said.
