Bogor Mayor Urges Use of Bongsang and Banana Leaves for Qurban Meat Distribution

Bogor Mayor Dedie A. Rachim has urged the use of bongsang and banana leaves for distributing Qurban meat during Eid al-Adha.

Bongsang are small baskets made from woven bamboo.

In addition to bongsang, Dedie also recommended using banana leaves for distributing the meat.

He further suggested using besek as containers for the meat distribution.

“Use environmentally friendly materials. In Bogor, there are bongsang, besek, and banana leaves. Why not try it once a year? It’s just once a year, after all,” Dedie told Kompas.com on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.

He noted that there is already a Mayor’s Regulation (Perwali) No. 61 of 2018 on Reducing Plastic Bag Usage.

“There is already the Perwali, the regulation for a plastic-free Bogor,” he said.

Therefore, he added, for the 2026 Eid al-Adha, he wants all residents receiving Qurban meat to remind each other not to use plastic bags during distribution.

“Let’s remind each other not to use plastic bags for distribution,” he explained.

The decision was made during the sidang isbat to determine the start of Zulhijah 1447 Hijriah held on Sunday, 17 May 2026.

Minister of Religion Nasaruddin Umar stated that the government combined hisab (astronomical calculations) and rukyatul hilal (moon sighting) from 88 observation points across Indonesia.

“It has been agreed that 1 Zulhijah 1447 Hijriah falls on Monday, 18 May 2026, and thus Eid al-Adha 1447 H on 10 Zulhijah 1447 Hijriah falls on Wednesday, 27 May 2026,” Nasaruddin Umar said in a press conference in Jakarta.
