Bogor launches regreening program

BOGOR, West Java (JP): Hundreds of high school students and civil servants planted 250 trees in 17 schoolyards yesterday to launch the city's regreening campaign.

Bogor Mayor Eddy Gunardi initiated yesterday's campaign by planting trees at the SMUN VII compound with other top city officials, including KORPRI (Civil Servants Corps) chairman Iswara Natanegara and Golkar's Bogor branch chairman Eman Akman.

The campaign's start also marked KORPRI's 25th anniversary.

Eddy said one problem hindering urban regreening programs was a lack of space because of the increasing need for buildings and public facilities.

"But we can make up for the hitch by utilizing open spaces like school and house yards, median strips, city parks and plots along riverbanks," the mayor said. (24/bas).
