Bogor City Government maps flood-prone areas to anticipate extreme rainfall

Bogor City Government is taking swift action to prepare for potential extreme weather. Mayor Dedie A Rachim has instructed all regional officials to heighten vigilance and immediately map flood-prone areas amid forecasts of extreme rainfall in West Java.

Dedie stated that Bogor’s rainfall could reach 120 to 200 millimetres in a single downpour, significantly above the normal average of around 70 millimetres. “We must increase awareness of local environmental conditions, including mapping and coordination to anticipate the impacts of extreme weather,” he said at Bogor City Hall on Monday (25 May).

Drainage blockages

Field assessments revealed that many drainage channels in Bogor are clogged with waste and not properly maintained. Poor water management is a frequent cause of flash floods during heavy rains.

In response, Dedie urged district leaders to strengthen on-ground monitoring. This is crucial to address environmental issues preventively before causing greater harm to the public. “I want to stress to district leaders to enhance oversight. Weak monitoring can lead to various problems causing losses,” he emphasized.

Urgent response needed

Dedie further stressed that officials must demonstrate high initiative and swift response to local issues. Flood and drainage management cannot rely on passive citizen reports; it requires proactive measures from on-site authorities.

Key areas of focus include Yasmin, where drainage is under national road authority. Dedie recommended new channel construction if existing capacity is insufficient. He also called for humanistic outreach to plant traders to stop selling on drainage channels and roads slated for repair.
