The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has officially granted an amended type certificate to the Boeing 737-7. With this approval, the newest variant of the 737 MAX family has formally received authorisation to begin commercial operations.

The issuance of the certificate marks a significant milestone for Boeing following a certification process that spanned several years. The FAA’s approval also clears the path for the first deliveries of the Boeing 737-7 to customers.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Stephanie Pope stated that the certification is a recognition of the aircraft’s meticulous design and the hard work of the Boeing development team. She added that the team managed to complete all certification requirements despite facing various challenges, from the pandemic to changes in the certification process.

“This certification is important because it validates the thoroughness of our aeroplane’s design, as well as the determination and resilience of the 737 MAX development team,” Pope said. “Our team remained focused on completing all requirements to deliver a safe and more reliable aeroplane for our customers.”

As the smallest variant with the longest range in the 737 MAX family, the Boeing 737-7 is designed to carry 135 to 160 passengers in a two-class configuration. The aircraft has a range of up to 7,040 kilometres, approximately 10% further than comparable aircraft, while offering up to 20% better fuel efficiency and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and a 50% smaller noise footprint compared to the aeroplanes it replaces.

Boeing noted that the FAA approval is the result of a certification programme that began in 2018. The process included more than 1,000 hours of air and ground testing, comprehensive system safety analyses, human factors evaluations, and updates to the engine anti-ice system.

Mike Sinnett, Boeing’s Senior Vice President of Product Strategy, Product Development and Development Programs, said the company coordinated intensively with the FAA throughout the certification process. “Through this certification process, Boeing has gained a deeper understanding of the latest regulatory standards, which is projected to accelerate future aircraft development, with a renewed emphasis on human factors, safety, and quality,” he stated.

Boeing, together with launch customer Southwest Airlines, is now preparing for the first delivery of the 737-7, including completing the final aircraft configuration. The FAA has also updated Boeing’s Production Certificate No. 700 to include the 737-7 model.

As of the end of June 2026, the Boeing 737 MAX family has accumulated more than 7,200 orders worldwide, with over 2,300 units already delivered to customers. Boeing is also continuing the certification process for the largest variant, the 737-10.
