A joint SAR team consisting of TNI, Polri, Basarnas personnel, and local residents successfully evacuated the body of West Papua TVRI presenter Yanto Idorway on Monday (27/7/2026). The victim was found in the Memti River, Pegunungan Arfak Regency, after being reported missing for nine days. The Head of Public Relations for the West Papua Regional Police (Polda), Commissioner Pol Trihadi Kuncahyo, confirmed that the body was discovered at around 11.05 WIT. The location was only about 10 metres from the spot where the victim was reported to have fallen and been swept away by the current on 18 July 2026. “On behalf of the West Papua Police Chief and all ranks, we extend our deepest condolences on the passing of our brother Yanto Idorway,” Trihadi said in Manokwari on Monday evening. Trihadi explained that the official SAR operation had actually been closed on Friday (24/7) after running for seven days in accordance with standard operating procedures. However, the joint team and local residents continued the search independently until the victim was found three days after the official operation was closed. During the search, the field team faced extreme geographical and weather challenges. “Thank you to the TNI, Polri, Basarnas personnel, local government, village heads, traditional leaders, and volunteers who showed extraordinary dedication and synergy during this search operation,” he added. The tragic incident began when Yanto Idorway visited the Memti Waterfall tourist area, Sisrang Village, Pegunungan Arfak, with two colleagues on Saturday (18/7) at around 14.00 WIT. While attempting to cross the river, the victim slipped and was immediately swept away by the strong current. Although his colleagues tried to help, the victim quickly disappeared from sight. In response to this incident, the West Papua Regional Police urged the public to be more vigilant and prioritise safety when engaging in activities in risky areas such as rivers, waterfalls, or beaches. Extra caution is required especially during bad weather or when water levels rise suddenly. “May the deceased find the best place with God Almighty and may the bereaved family be given strength and fortitude,” Trihadi concluded.
