The Governor of North Sumatra, Bobby Nasution, has offered the US$1.73 billion Toba Caldera Resort investment as one of the province’s flagship projects during the 32nd Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Ministerial Meeting in Medan on Thursday (10/09/202<0xA0>6).

Bobby presented the project while serving as the Chair of the Chief Ministers’ and Governors’ Forum (CMGF) during the final day’s reporting session at the JW Marriott Hotel Medan.

“In North Sumatra, we are pleased to report the flagship project of the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone covering 1,934 hectares, the US$1.73 billion Toba Caldera Resort at Lake Toba, the North Sumatra Strategic Industrial Area (KISS) spanning 2,445 hectares, and an integrated creative economy, MICE, and smart city centre in Deli Serdang,” Bobby stated in an official release from the North Sumatra Communications and Information Office.

In addition to the Toba Caldera Resort, Bobby detailed the Sei Mangkei SEZ and the KISS industrial area. The North Sumatra Provincial Government is also promoting the development of a creative economy, meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition (MICE) hub, and an integrated smart city in Deli Serdang.

During the forum, Bobby also presented five CMGF recommendations, including the mobilisation of resources along the IMT-GT economic corridor, the integration of green concepts, and the utilisation of collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and ASEAN for technical and financial support for corridor projects and Green City initiatives.

This presentation is part of North Sumatra’s efforts to introduce strategic projects and investment opportunities to IMT-GT member nations. The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that the IMT-GT forum is expected to accelerate strategic projects within the region, including special economic zones.

Airlangga also expressed hope that the special economic zones located in North Sumatra could expand through integrated cooperation between Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.

“This is driven by the need to accelerate strategic projects in the region. We can see various countries are preparing Special Economic Zones, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. Therefore, I hope that the Special Economic Zones in North Sumatra can also grow, as this is part of the integration of cooperation within this region,” Airlangga said.
