Boat capsizes in Makassar, six dead

MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Six people died and three others were injured when the boat carrying them capsized in the Jeneberang River here on Tuesday.

The accident occurred at about 1 p.m. as the boat, carrying 20 people, was making its way from Sungguminasa village in Gowa district to Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province.

A spokesman for the Gowa Police said the hull of the vessel apparently developed a leak.

The passengers on the boat were traveling to visit relatives for the Idul Fitri holiday, the police spokesman said.

Police identified the dead as Fatria, 9, Sikma, 5, Mira, 3, Fatimah, 9, Sulaeman, 40, and Nurul, 50.

The three people injured in the accident are being treated at the Bhayangkara Police Hospital. They were identified as Dahria, Nurjana and Sukri. -- Antara
