Boar bloodbath in Bengkulu
BENGKULU, Bengkulu: During the last week around 300 crop- damaging wild boars have been shot dead by members of the Indonesian Target Shooting and Hunting Association.
The head of the team, which comes from Central Java, Rustam Sentiko, said Friday that the efforts to exterminate wild boars in the area have been carried out since 1985, when 5,000 wild boars were killed.
Rustam, a retired army brigadier general, told Antara news agency the association's activities are based on a Presidential Instruction which orders the fight against agricultural pests, especially wild boars, that have inflicted losses on farmers.
The majority of the dead boars have been sent to a meat reservation factory in Jambi, East Sumatra, for export.
"We will keep the rest to make jerked meat," Rustam quoted by Antara as saying.(16)
