BNPT: Success of deradicalisation measured by social reintegration
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) Eddy Hartono has said that the success of deradicalisation programmes is measured by the ability of beneficiaries to resume social functions and achieve economic independence.
“So this success is not only measured by changes in understanding,” Eddy said when confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday.
According to him, the success of deradicalisation is also evident in the reacceptance of beneficiaries by their families and communities after undergoing a series of coaching programmes.
Deradicalisation is a planned, integrated, and systematic process to reduce, eliminate, or reverse radical and terrorist understanding in individuals or groups who have been exposed.
The programme aims to change extremist mindsets so that they return to moderate, national, and peaceful values.
He said the challenges of counter-terrorism are increasingly complex as the spread of extremist ideologies exploiting digital spaces continues to grow.
Therefore, the implementation of deradicalisation cannot be carried out by a single institution alone, but requires cross-sector collaboration in accordance with the mandate of Presidential Regulation Number 8 of 2026 concerning the National Action Plan for the Prevention and Countering of Violent Extremism Leading to Terrorism Phase Two 2026-2029.
“The President’s direction is very clear, namely to strengthen synergy and collaboration. Deradicalisation programmes will be more effective if all ministries and agencies carry out their respective roles in an integrated manner,” he said.
Eddy said this step is part of the government’s strategy to ensure that deradicalisation does not stop at changing perspectives, but also restores the social functions and independence of beneficiaries.
According to him, the Ministry of Social Affairs has a strategic role in the rehabilitation of citizens exposed to terrorist ideologies through stages of identification, rehabilitation, re-education, and social reintegration.
Meanwhile, Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf, in a meeting with BNPT in Jakarta some time ago, said the Ministry of Social Affairs supports the implementation of deradicalisation programmes through social rehabilitation services at various centres owned by the ministry.
“I thank BNPT for continuing to provide good assistance to beneficiaries at Ministry of Social Affairs centres,” said Saifullah Yusuf.
According to Saifullah, social rehabilitation is carried out in an integrated manner with BNPT and related ministries or agencies through psychosocial assistance, capacity building, and empowerment as preparation for returning to community life.
On Monday (27/7), Eddy together with Saifullah inspected social rehabilitation services at Sentra Handayani, Jakarta.
The inspection was carried out to ensure that rehabilitation, assistance, and empowerment services are running optimally as part of joint efforts to strengthen the implementation of the national deradicalisation programme.
