BNPT: Shifting Terrorism Threat Patterns Demand Technological Adaptation

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) has affirmed that changing patterns of terrorist threats require all stakeholders to continuously build capacity, adapt to technological developments, and strengthen collaboration in prevention.

BNPT chief Eddy Hartono said the spread of radical ideology no longer relies on physical meetings or organisational structures, but instead exploits digital platforms to expand its influence.

“At present, the terrorist threat is increasingly adaptive and persistent. As BNPT enters its 16th year, it must be understood that we need to think adaptively,” Eddy said when contacted in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to him, in today’s era the process of terrorist indoctrination no longer requires an organisation or face-to-face contact, but takes place through the digital sphere.

In the digital space, he said, terrorist networks transform adaptively through three channels: recruitment, propaganda, and terrorism financing.

Amid these changing methods, Eddy noted that Indonesia has maintained a positive trend in counter-terrorism efforts. No terrorist attacks have occurred in Indonesia since 2024.

In his view, this achievement is the result of synergy between intelligence agencies, law enforcement, ministries and agencies, regional governments, academics, religious leaders, community organisations, the media, and active public participation.

“Since 2024 until now, there have been no terrorist attacks. Over the past three years, intelligence and law enforcement have been able to thwart various planned terror attacks. The key to that success is collaboration,” he said.

Therefore, as it enters its 16th year on Thursday (16 July), BNPT has reminded that the terrorist threat in Indonesia is increasingly transforming into the digital space.

Under the theme “Collaboration to Safeguard Indonesia”, the 16th anniversary of BNPT has served as a moment to strengthen cross-sector cooperation in facing evolving terrorist challenges, particularly in the digital era.

BNPT believes that keeping Indonesia safe from terrorist acts does not depend solely on security forces, but also requires improved digital literacy, public vigilance, and stronger resilience against the spread of violent ideology in cyberspace.
