BNPT: Shifting Terrorism Threat Patterns Demand Technological Adaptation

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) has stressed that the changing pattern of terrorist threats demands all stakeholders continuously enhance their capacity, adapt to technological developments, and strengthen collaboration in prevention. BNPT Chief Eddy Hartono stated that the spread of radical ideologies no longer relies on physical meetings or organisational structures, but instead utilises digital platforms to expand its influence. “Currently, the threat of terrorism is increasingly adaptive and persistent. It must be understood that at the age of 16, BNPT needs to think adaptively,” Eddy said when confirmed in Jakarta on Wednesday. According to him, in this era, the process of terrorist indoctrination no longer requires an organisation or face-to-face meetings, but occurs through digital spaces. In the digital space, he said, terrorist networks transform adaptively through three methods: recruitment, propaganda, and terrorist financing. Amid these changing modus operandi, Eddy conveyed that Indonesia has successfully maintained a positive trend in counterterrorism. Since 2024 until now, no acts of terrorism have occurred in Indonesia. He opined that this achievement is the result of synergy among intelligence agencies, law enforcement, ministries and agencies, local governments, academics, religious leaders, community organisations, the media, and active public participation. “Since 2024 until now, there have been no acts of terrorism. Over the last three years, intelligence and law enforcement agencies have managed to prevent various planned terror attacks. The key to that success is collaboration,” he stated. Therefore, as it marks its 16th anniversary on Thursday (16/7), BNPT has reminded that the threat of terrorism in Indonesia is now increasingly transforming into the digital space. Carrying the theme “Collaboration to Protect Indonesia”, the commemoration of BNPT’s 16th Anniversary has become a momentum to strengthen cross-sector cooperation in facing the continuously evolving challenges of terrorism, particularly in the digital era. BNPT considers that the success in keeping Indonesia safe from acts of terror does not solely depend on security forces, but also requires improved digital literacy, public vigilance, and strengthened resilience against the spread of violent ideologies in cyberspace.
