BNPB: Stroke Survivor Dies as Floods Strike Sukoharjo, Central Java
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has reported that a stroke survivor died during flooding that struck Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java.
Head of the BNPB’s Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre, Abdul Muhari, said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday that the victim died after being evacuated to hospital when their residential area was submerged by floodwaters.
BNPB confirmed that prolonged heavy rainfall beginning on Sunday evening (22 February) caused drainage channels and rivers to overflow, inundating three sub-districts: Polokarto, Mojolaban and Grogol.
BNPB recorded that 13 households were displaced to Bakalan Village and the Dukuh Klatak embankment. The local government has prepared an additional location for evacuation tents at the Jatiteken Embankment as a precautionary measure should water levels rise again.
Abdul Muhari disclosed that the damage included 46 affected homes and seven flooded road access points. The conditions temporarily hampered residents’ mobility and the distribution of aid.
BNPB urged communities in flood-prone areas to heighten their vigilance, particularly during periods of high-intensity and prolonged rainfall, and to promptly follow the instructions of officials if asked to evacuate for their safety.
