BNPB: Several Indonesian Regions at Risk of Heavy Rain with Thunderstorms
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) urges local governments and the public to heighten vigilance following the Indonesia Meteorological Agency (BMKG) forecast of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds in several regions.
Abdul Muhari, Head of BNPB’s Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Centre, stated in Jakarta on Sunday night that on-the-ground preparedness is crucial as extreme weather triggers hydro-meteorological disasters, such as the recent flooding in Blora Regency, Central Java.
“Based on BMKG’s weather forecast, several Indonesian regions are still at risk of moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds. We urge local authorities and communities to remain vigilant against potential disasters,” Abdul said.
He explained that the real impact of prolonged extreme weather includes flooding that submerged 35 homes and two educational facilities—SD Mulyorejo 1 and SMP 4 Cepu—in Mulyorejo Village, Cepu District, Blora Regency, on Friday night (22 May).
Although floodwaters in Blora had receded by Saturday (23 May) after assessment by local disaster management agencies, BNPB warned that atmospheric conditions remain highly volatile as some areas begin entering the dry season.
Therefore, Abdul added, BNPB’s preparedness measures extend beyond flood and landslide risks to include dry hydro-meteorological disasters such as drought and forest and land fires (karhutla).
The public is advised to monitor official updates and early warnings issued by local governments, BPBD, BMKG, and PVMBG. Proactive measures and swift responses are key to minimising disaster-related risks and damage.
