BNPB Says Only Two Hotspots Remain in Bromo Forest Fire

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has reported that forest and land fires (karhutla) in the Mount Bromo area, East Java, have been reduced to just two remaining hotspots.

BNPB Chief Suharyanto stated that the agency has deployed three helicopters to assist in extinguishing the fires from the air. “We still have a reserve of three helicopters that can be mobilised anywhere, such as to Bromo, where we deployed three helicopters and managed to reduce the fires from 34 hotspots to just two,” Suharyanto said at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs office on Monday (10/8).

He explained that three mountain areas had experienced fires recently: Bromo, Mount Gede Pangrango, and Mount Rinjani. Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago confirmed that the fires at Mount Rinjani and Mount Gede Pangrango have been fully extinguished.

The fire in the Bromo area began on Monday, 3 August 2026, at around 5 p.m. local time. As the hotspots spread, the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) temporarily closed all tourist access to the Mount Bromo area as of Saturday (8/8).

According to a report by the East Java Provincial Disaster Mitigation Agency’s Head of Emergency and Logistics, Satriyo Nurseno, as of Monday (10/8) at 6 a.m. local time, the total burned area had reached 550 hectares. He noted that the affected vegetation includes mountain cypress, mentigen, acacia, and shrubs. No casualties have been reported in the incident.
