BNPB Reveals Latest Conditions After M 7.7 Earthquake Rocks NTT
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake shook Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Saturday morning (15/8/2026) at 04.58 WIB. The powerful tremor was centred at sea at a depth of 15 km, 38 km northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo.
The massive quake not only struck NTT but was also felt strongly as far as West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and Sulawesi Island.
A preliminary report from the Sikka Military District Command recorded that the earthquake caused severe damage in the El Say Port area, Sikka Regency. Two people were reported dead (one male and one female), while another resident sustained injuries. A joint team from Basarnas, the Indonesian National Armed Forces, and the National Police is now moving quickly to carry out evacuations at the location.
“Casualty data is still in the process of verification and further data collection by the team in the field,” wrote the official report of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). After further verification, the latest report stated that one person had died and four others were injured.
Residents Fled
The powerful shaking, lasting about one minute, triggered panic in Nageoeo, Sikka, and West Manggarai Regencies. Residents rushed out of their homes to save themselves.
In response to the Tsunami Early Warning that was briefly activated after the quake, the local Regional Disaster Management Agency immediately directed emergency evacuations for communities along the coastal areas.
Panic also reached Bima City (NTB) and parts of South Sulawesi such as Jeneponto Regency, Selayar Islands, and Maros, where residents also felt strong tremors.
A Series of Aftershocks Pounded NTT
Following the mainshock, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a series of aftershocks with considerable magnitudes continuing to bombard the NTT region. Some of them included:
At 05.13 WIB: Magnitude 6.2
At 05.28 WIB: Magnitude 6.2
At 05.37 WIB: Magnitude 5.6
As well as several other aftershocks ranging around Magnitude 5.5.
Nevertheless, BNPB confirmed that the series of aftershocks was reported not to have tsunami potential.
Official Appeal from BNPB
As of the time this news was published, BNPB, together with the Regional Disaster Management Agency and joint apparatus, was still continuing to update data regarding the total number of fatalities, injuries, and the level of infrastructure damage.
BNPB urged the public—especially those in coastal areas—to remain calm, stay alert, and stay away from buildings that are cracked or structurally damaged. The public was also asked not to blindly consume wild rumours and to only monitor official information from BMKG, BNPB, Regional Disaster Management Agency, and the Indonesian National Armed Forces-National Police channels.
