The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has stated that floodwaters inundating Kapuas Hulu Regency, West Kalimantan, are now reported to be gradually receding in several affected locations. Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre, said in Jakarta on Thursday that although water levels are beginning to drop, the local Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) remains deployed in the field to anticipate weather dynamics. β€œThe latest conditions reported by the field team as of Wednesday show the flooding has gradually subsided. However, personnel in the area continue to conduct periodic assessments and strengthen cross-agency coordination,” he said. He explained that the hydrometeorological disaster previously struck the interior region of West Kalimantan in the early hours of Tuesday (16/6) at around 04.00 WIB due to extreme weather factors. High-intensity rainfall over a prolonged duration triggered a drastic surge in water volume in the Empanang and Kantuk rivers, causing them to overflow into surrounding residential areas. Based on rapid assessment data received by the BNPB, the overflow from the two rivers inundated residential areas within the administrative corridors of Kumang Jaya Village and Nanga Kantuk Village, Empanang District. According to Abdul, the impact of the disaster recorded at least 66 families directly affected, with 66 residential houses submerged by the floodwaters. The BNPB continues to urge regional authorities and communities living around river basins to remain vigilant, given the potential for subsequent rainfall that could trigger a renewed rise in water levels at any time.
