The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) head Suharyanto revealed that 1,051 disasters have hit Indonesia up to the middle of 2026 during a budget working meeting with House Commission VIII and several ministers in South Jakarta on Wednesday. He initially reminded all parties to remain vigilant as disasters in Indonesia are becoming increasingly frequent. “We ask for our collective attention that every day, week, month and year, disasters in our beloved Indonesia are growing larger, both in quantity and quality,” Suharyanto said during the meeting. He stated that the 1,051 natural disasters recorded so far are based on incidents handled by the central government. He added that the agency’s data is largely consistent with figures held by the Ministry of Social Affairs due to close cooperation in the field. Suharyanto further warned that the middle of 2026 is likely to see numerous dry hydrometeorological disasters, including forest and land fires. He also touched on the threat of El Niño, but assured legislators that the phenomenon is currently at a moderate stage. He noted that while some media outlets had warned of a severe drought, the meteorology agency stated the El Niño remains moderate, meaning significant rain is still present, though conditions are hotter than in 2025. He reported that land and forest fires have already occurred in Riau, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan and Jambi, including recently in West Aceh, but the situation does not yet require special attention.
