BNPB records extreme weather triggering damage to homes in several areas
Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has recorded extreme weather events in the form of strong winds and tornadoes that have affected several regions across Indonesia in recent days, causing damage to homes and impacting dozens of households.
Abdul Muhari, head of the BNPB’s Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre, in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday, said that the strong-wind event in Pasuruan Regency, East Java, on Wednesday, 4 March, injured one resident and damaged 17 houses and public facilities.
Additionally, in Situbondo Regency, East Java, the extreme weather affected 28 households with varying levels of house damage: 12 houses damaged lightly, 14 moderately, and two severely damaged.
Similar incidents were also reported outside Java. In Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan, the extreme weather on Wednesday, 4 March, affected 62 households and damaged 61 housing units spread across six villages in one district, with conditions now reported to be gradually returning to normal.
Meanwhile, the tornado that occurred on the same day in Kerinci Regency, Jambi, affected 11 households, while in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, the same event affected 31 households.
Abdul said that emergency response remains ongoing by local authorities together with the community, including through self-repair of homes in the affected areas.
BNPB urged the public to heighten vigilance against the potential for extreme weather in the coming days, including mitigation measures such as pruning tree branches prone to collapse and inspecting roof conditions.
