BNPB records 1,730 disasters striking Indonesia up to September 2026

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has recorded 1,730 natural disaster events across various regions of Indonesia from the start of the year up to 7 September 2026, triggering damage to hundreds of thousands of homes and public facilities.

BNPB Main Secretary Rustian, speaking at a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, said that all 38 provinces and 514 regencies/cities in Indonesia are in moderate to high levels of disaster vulnerability.

“Based on BNPB’s compiled data up to 7 September 2026, there have been 1,730 disaster events, dominated by hydrometeorological and geological disasters,” he said.

Rustian detailed that hydrometeorological disasters recorded the highest number of events, comprising 627 forest and land fires (karhutla), 543 floods, 324 extreme weather events, 105 landslides, 101 droughts, and 14 tidal waves and abrasion events.

This series of disasters resulted in significant physical damage, with 111,533 residential homes affected, comprising 29,143 severely damaged, 24,521 moderately damaged, and 57,869 lightly damaged units.

The damage also extended to public facilities, including 2,361 educational facilities, 867 houses of worship, 230 basic and referral health facilities, 751 office buildings, and 92 bridges cut off.

In response to the damage, BNPB has ensured that the acceleration of emergency handling, rehabilitation and reconstruction continues through the deployment of national resources and support for regional governments.

“For the 2027 fiscal year, the government has approved an initial budget ceiling of Rp1.12 trillion for BNPB, which already includes a special allocation of Rp126.24 billion for accelerating post-disaster recovery in three provinces in Sumatra, namely Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra,” he said.
