BNPB: Over 188,000 People Still Displaced Following NTT Earthquake

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that 188,161 people are still displaced due to the earthquake disaster in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) as of Sunday (30/8).

“We have also received reports that the number of displaced persons stands at 18\8,161,” said the Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Centre, Berton SP Panjaitan, during a press conference on Sunday.

Berton noted that this figure represents a decrease of 4,142 people from Nagekeo, East Manggarai, and Ngada Regencies.

Berton stated that there has been no increase in the death toll to date. This means that 111 fatalities have been recorded as a result of the earthquake.

Meanwhile, the number of injured persons is recorded at 1,631, consisting of 223 people with serious injuries and 1,408 with minor injuries.

On the other hand, Berton mentioned that as of Sunday, 9,765 aftershocks have been recorded in the NTT region. He noted that the largest aftershock recorded a magnitude of 6.2, while the smallest was magnitude 1.

“We continue to convey that earthquakes such as these can be experienced for up to 3 to 4 weeks after the initial earthquake occurs,” said Berton.

Previously, the BNPB revealed that the Governor of NTT, Emmanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, has extended the emergency response status for earthquake handling for 14 days until 12 September 2026.

Berton stated that this is the first extension following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck NTT on 15 August.

“Currently, we have obtained an extension for the next 14 days, with the emergency response status extended until 12 September 2026,” Berton said during a press conference held at the BNPB office in Jakarta on Saturday (29/8).

Berton mentioned that the extension of the emergency response status is crucial for the distribution of logistics and other forms of assistance to ensure they are delivered effectively without administrative errors.
